The Fight

The Fight

When having to confront someone who thinks they are superior than you there are certain ways to handle it. Many people result to violence while others try to reason with the other person. The narrator of the short story "The Fight" written by Richard Wright comes across a bully. He is immediately harrassed by a boy with his group of friends. This is how it all began, " At noon recess I went into the school grounds, and a group of boys sauntered up to me, looked at me from my head to my feet, whispering among themselves. I leaned against a wall, trying to conceal my uneasiness...". This is when they were arguing back and forth. This is what resulted next, "He was pushed again, and I struck out with my right and caught him in the mouth. The crowd yelled, milled, surging so close that I could barely lift my arm to land a blow...".
I don't agree with the narrator throwing the first hit. I don't agree with his action because I believe that if one person doesn't inflict physical harm onto the other then the argument isn't suppose to get to that level. I personally wouldn't inflict physical harm onto the other person until it is obvious that they are trying to inflict physical harm onto me. I have been in a plethora of situations where the argument gets extremely intense but no physical harm is as a result. The times where the arguments get physical is when it is evident that the other person is trying to inflict physical harm onto me.
It is understandable that the narrator didn't want to have future confrontations of this sort with other boys in the school but the best thing to do was swallow his pride and walk away. Getting into this physical altercation could of resulted in him being removed from his new school indefinitely. If it was to get to a point where the bully's intentions was to hurt him initially then self defense comes into play.
In conclusion, I believe that the narrators results were inappropriate to an extent. I believe the narrator could of handled the situation in a mature and responsible manner.
